Jay Jeganenthiran Director of Coaching

Picture

Jay comes to us from Sri Lanka after completing his PHd last year on strength and conditioning for sprinters. We are extremely fortunate to have someone with Jay's knowledge, experience and expertise and he has graciously accepted the position of Director of Coaching for the club. He comes from a huge background of international athlete, national Sri Lankan Champion and many years of coaching, administering and studying the sport.
Jay works mainly with our older teenagers and sprinters and generously gives time to our Masters athletes and their endeavours. While his PHd was about sprinting he is hugely knowledgeable about all disciplines of the sport.

Judy MacDonald

Judy MacDonald, Phoenix Athletic Club coach Christchurch. Athletics New Zealand
Judy is President of the Phoenix Athletic Club as well as Head Coach for the Junior squad (under 15) and high jump coach for all ages. As a promising child athlete across all disciplines whose career was cut short for family reasons, a huge part of her coaching philosophy is based on all athletes being given every opportunity to succeed no matter what their family or social situation. Returning to compete in veteran athletics as an adult competitive endeavours were soon put to one side to focus on coaching children’s athletics where there was a large gap to be filled.

Judy is a contributor to the Athletics New Zealand Run Jump Throw manual and has also coached several athletes to international team standard – World Youth, Youth Commonwealth and Oceania Championships. Over the last 25 years she has coached multiple National and Canterbury Champions at club and school level and record holders across a variety of events and high jumpers for ANZ high performance athletes. She has also acted as team manager across a huge variety of athletic teams from school to provincial level.

Steve Lasei

Picture
Steve is our awesome throws coach who generously gives his time to anyone that asks. He has his own throws crew in the club comprising our top throwers who train on a Tuesday afternoon. but also takes anyone looking for throws advice on a Thursday afternoon - both sessions at Rannerdale.
Steve is an outstanding thrower himself and was considered a teenage prodigy while still at school and was lucky enough to get coaching input from Chris Mene.
Steve is an active member of Masters athletics and continues to throw very close to his best when he was breaking Canterbury records in his teenage years.
