Club Philosophy

At Phoenix Athletics Club our Athletes are the focus and the future of our club and the sport.

Our Coaches, Parents and Supporters are just as important, as they provide the nurturing and guidance our athletes need.
Respect for all parties involved in the development of the athlete is to be the basis of all interactions throughout the Phoenix Club environment.

Phoenix Athletics Club supports and guides the athletes toward developing full and extensive athletic potential and ability to enable them to compete at the highest levels of our sport as a child athlete, as a senior athlete and as they continue as an adult.

All of the Phoenix Athletics Club Adults (Coaches, Parents and Supporters) in positions of responsibility within the club, particularly those who have personal contact with the athletes, are people of the highest ethical and moral standards who wholly agree with the club philosophy and principles. Our Athletes always ensure they behave and communicate according to this philosophy as well as our own, Athletics Canterbury and Athletics New Zealand's various Codes of Ethics.

Phoenix Athletics Club athletes will be encouraged to challenge themselves to try new activities and events to ensure a broad base of skills and knowledge, which will become more Focused, Tailored and Specific as they mature and developed assisting them in deciding which events they would like to specialize in.

Phoenix Athletics Club athletes are in control of the choices made regarding their physical activities and will never be forced, coerced or manipulated into competing in events they do not enjoy.

At Phoenix Athletics Club we ensure events and activities are not to be offered to athletes which are physiologically or psychologically inappropriate for them.

The Phoenix Athletics Club will only sanction fundraising and social activities if they are compatible with the club philosophy and do not send messages which conflicts with the healthy lifestyle promoted by the Phoenix Athletics Club.

Optimal adult athletes are aware of all facets of athlete development so the Phoenix Athletics Club will address all aspects of knowledge necessary to reach this level.  A holistic approach will be taken that includes giving information on nutrition, psychology, structure of the sport, drug testing, physiology, how to use sport science effectively, competing overseas and all other relevant areas.

The Phoenix Athletics Club will continuously develop the physical environment to provide the highest quality facilities and equipment with a special emphasis on safety. Acknowledging personal achievement, and achievement within the sport is a core focus of the Phoenix Athletics Club during the season and at the end of season prize giving. Athletes are and will be encouraged to set realistic but challenging goals in consultation with coaches and parents which relate to present day needs and long term development.

All avenues are to be explored by the Phoenix Athletics Club and parents/caregivers if financial hardship is preventing optimal development of the athlete.
